Monsanto’s “Mobile Technology Unit”—a custom-built, 53-foot long, bio-diesel powered, traveling laboratory—has begun touring the United States.
This year alone, they expect to host thousands of invited farmers and their families on its tour across the country.
Each year, hundreds of farmers would visit Monsanto’s Chesterfield, MO laboratories to see firsthand how the multi million dollar research pays off for them. But since not everyone can come to their laboratories in Missouri, Monsanto decided to take the laboratory to the growers. Thus, Monsanto went to Craftsmen Industries in St. Charles, MO.
According to Craftsmen project manager, Dan Struckhoff, Monsanto’s MTU packs a lot of high tech equipment, displays a “WOW! Factor” into the 1,000 sq. feet of exhibit space. “The challenge with this project was developing something from the beginning that was going to be unique, attractive, and at the same time, work.”
“Everything on board the un-folded trailer must fit together like pieces of a puzzle in order to function in transportation mode.
The MTU is a custom-built 53 foot, double expandable trailer with 20 foot awnings on either side.
On board the Mobile Technology Unit, one first enters a theater to view a film featuring football great, Kurt Warner. They then take a guided tour through high tech exhibits that feature interactive presentations including advanced robotic systems and videos about crop analytics, biotechnology, product pipeline and ethanol.

Visitors also have the opportunity to view more exhibits outside, including an on-site ethanol production demonstration unit.
According to Jim Zimmer, VP-US Branded Business for Monsanto, “The Mobile Technology Unit is an effective way to demonstrate our commitment to our customers because we realize that our success depends on their success. “
