Clif Bar Bus Hits the Road on Biodiesel
Craftsmen felt an eco-friendly sense of accomplishment when completing a project for Action Marketing Group (AMG). AMG, located in Boulder, Colorado, approached Craftsmen with a concept to completely transform a 1959 GMC Crown Coach into an environmentally-friendly mobile tour, for their client, Clif Bar. The uni-body bus was reinvented to reflect millennium standards, running on biodiesel and recycled interior components, including refurbished monitors, bamboo flooring and CFL lighting.
AMG aligned their perception with Clif Bar’s Two Mile Challenge (2MC) message. The notion is easy- encourage people to ride a bike to any destination within a 2 mile radius to help global warming and environmental issues faced daily.
Craftsmen customized the bus exterior with a complete graphics and an 8-foot x 10-foot upper deck on the rear of the bus. The upper deck

turned into a stage used for band performances throughout the tour. The interior consisted of two 20-inch x 30-inch skylights, an illuminated map in the floor, backlit kiosks, and graphics applied throughout. The bus engine was converted over to run on both biodiesel and gasoline. Craftsmen gained a solid understanding of how biodiesel operates after thorough research. Understanding biodiesel runs on both vegetable oil and biodiesel, the oil must remain at a certain temperature to prevent freezing, so heaters were installed to remain in the liquid state.
The GMC bus began travelling in September and toured around to a variety of locations, including farmer’s markets, college campuses and pedestrian malls in the Southwest, West Coast and Pacific Northwest area. With an excess of 63,000 tour attendees, Action Marketing Group agrees that the 2 Mile Challenge tour was a complete success.
